Activity #4: MaST

“Well, I am wondering about two things. First, what would happen if I gave a plant very little water? Would it grow? If it grew, would it look a lot different from the other plants we have growing? How could we find out?”
Take suggestions and with the children decide on how to set up the very little water experiment. Then ask the children to predict or have a best guess as to what will happen. Write their best guesses on chart paper to be saved for the outcome of the experiment.
“We have decided to plant a seed in another peat pot and label it with a picture of a water drop that we will draw an X through. This sign will tell us that this plant will receive very little water.”

“This is exciting. Here is our first experiment. Let’s call it Experiment A.
We have:
1. all the seeds that we planted correctly and are giving them the right amount of water, light (warmth) and space in our control group.
2. the two seeds that we will plant in the peat pots that we are giving only five drops of water once a week. They will continue to receive as much light as the control group”
“What are your best guesses on what you think will happen?”
Record their ideas.
“Do you have anything else you are wondering about, because I still have another one?”
“Great! That is what I was thinking also.”
“My second wondering is what would happen if I gave a plant very little light? Would it grow? If it grew, would it look a lot different from the other plants we have growing? And again, how could we find out?”
Again, take suggestions and with the children decide on how to set up the very little light experiment. Then ask the children to predict or have a best guess as to what will happen. Write their best guesses on chart paper to be saved for the outcome of the experiment.
“We have decided to plant a seed in each of two peat pots cup and label it with a picture of a sun that we will draw two lines through. This sign will tell us that this plant will receive very little light, but as much water as the control group.”
“Again, what are your best guesses about what you think will happen with these two plants?”
“We have another experiment – experiment B.
Now, we have:
1. all the seeds that we planted correctly and are giving the right amount of water. and light – the control group.
2. the two plants that we are going to put a paper towel tube around and cover with a piece of aluminum foil. They will continue to receive as much water as the control group.”

“We can now just watch all our plants grow.”
